29/5/'08 Location, location, location
Doing some interesting location sound gigs for various indie TV production companies. SQNs are lovely...
Figuring out My SQL, gonna make this into a real blog!
Yamaha TX16W article updated. Sample library uploaded.
20/5/'08 Street Singer
Listen out for Fionnbarra's "Hideous Human Angel" album, out now and produced by me. Great stuff!
Here's his myspace page.
15/5/'08 Optigan
I got the Optigan sample CD. A quirky early sampler kinda, used by Tom Waits and The Eels, among others.
Cool sounds, great fun. If you like the Mellotron, you'll like this too.
13/5/'08 Gutted
I entered the Today FM "Beat the Original" competition with this cover of the classic Thin Lizzy song.
I didn't make it to the final 5 :( But I'm very pleased with the work, it took about 6 hours over two nights,
from figuring out a variation on the chord progression, working up an arrangement, building an intro and
an outro (with Sally's help!) and mixing with mastering. Opinions welcome!
19/4/'08 More studio
I finally got around to rationalising my plugins- I've halved the number of free VSTs I'm using it Pro Tools
via fxpansions excellent VST to RTAS wrapper. Using the excellent Massey tape head plugin for mastering warmth
it doesn't sound exactly like a good tape machine, but makes nice sounds nonetheless!
Garageband '08 is seeing a lot of use as a composing tool- it's so fast for getting ideas down and orchestrated.
9/4/'08 Studio
The piano- she has arrived! And she's very happy :)
Actually got some tracks finished, dunno where I find the time, roll on summer!
Life is good in the countryside.

Finn's doing well in NYC.
Bud's live album mix is finished, and "sounds like a record"!
Stan has been using my Yamaha sampler on the secondhand culture project with Rory Cobb.
Quite apt, using a vintage sampler on something like this! :)
30/1/'08
Finn's album Hideous Human Angel is finished.
Bud's live album almost finished...
Casio VZ-1 still for sale! Email me if interested.
9/1/'08- Happy new year!
Weekdays are booked out with teaching work until June.
I am still available for mastering at weekends.
Currently mixing the Buds live, and Fionbarra's album.
Redesigning studio in the new location, by the sea. Superstition holds that studios by the sea
are the best :)
Casio VZ-1 keyboard for sale- lovely synth action, 3 mod wheels and assignable foot controller, cool sounding synth.
I am changing to the rackmomunting version due to Feng Shui :)
17/12/'07- Christmas
I did location sound for Conal Creedon's Christmas in Cork feature The Boys of Fairhill, recording the lads singing in
the North Mon.
To be broadcast Christmas tonight I think...
5/12/'07- Classical
Still busy. David O'Connell and I set up his gear in the Honan Chapel to record a choir recently. Here are some pics.
Got an Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phaser, and a valve pre amp for the Transcriptors record player.
The studio will be moving to a new acoustically treated location shortly, to facilitate mastering, audio post and composing. That's where the rewards are :) In future, drums will be recorded on location when necessary.
20/11/'07- DJ Set
It's been a busy month! But I still have time to do a DJ set at the liquid lounge this Thursday. More info here.
Please come along if you like melodic electronic music!
26/10/'07- More vintage samplers
Robert Plant is at the studio now:
That's him there in the corner.
I got an Ensoniq Mirage sampler too.
17/10/'07- Glockenspiel
MAKING PICTURES has just been short listed for the BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM AWARD at the
Boston Irish Film Festival November 8-11 2007.
Irish premiere is Oct 15th 2007 at the Corona Cork Film Festival.
European premiere is on the 20th October 2007 at the ARTECINEMA FILM FEST in Naples, Italy.
Funny thing. I used my glockenspiel on Declan's film. It's also seeing some use on that street singer's album
I'm doing right now. Turns out The Feeling use the same one! So it must be good :) See The Feeling's
glockenspiel here. And mine is here (at the back).
2/10/'07- Housekeeping
Cleaned the sink, it was manky.
The MX1000 is so good!
Room dimensions added to gear list.
19/09/'07- Two of our films in the running
Making Pictures has been selected for ArteCinema as well as the Cork Film Festival.
Rebel Underground has been selected for the Cork Film Festival also.
Upright Pianos now available in Emulator X2 format. New shop here.
12/09/'07- New studio
Take a look at the latest studio pictures here.
Doing another documentary about the Air India disaster, this time for Discovery Channel.
Just completed audio post for No Go, an educational film about joyriding. More info soon...
One of Cork's best known street singers has started an album project with me.
Just for fun, here are some pics from Thomas Dolby's classic album, which we're covering.
6/09/'07- New stuff
Just got a very very nice weighted keyboard, an Akai MX1000, it's also a nice sounding digital piano.
5/09/'07- Gear sold
Been very busy. Lots of interesting gigs. Just finished location sound for a Canadian docu on the Air India disaster,
directed by the esteemed Sturla Gunarsson.
Doing post for an educational film on joyriding, mixing the Refuseniks and recording the Symbolics :) Got rid of NI Guitar
Rig, the Vox is doing the business with the Refuseniks, we've finished all the overdubs and it's set to be a pop gem.
10/08/'07- Gear for sale
Yamaha CS5 synth in great condition, pics below, has Kenton filter CV input kit fitted. SOLD
Casio VL-1 VL Tone cult micro synth, works perfectly, a little yellow with age! I'll post a pic later. SOLD
27/07/'07- Schizophrenic weather
Sourced a 1.8GHz Celeron machine for Emulator X2. Kontakt might get binned...
18/07/'07- Feng Shui
The BCF2000 is really good. Works well, mixing is definitely faster. One more purchase, a keyboard overlay for Pro Tools
shortcuts, from here. Inexpensive and highly recommended. So now I can finish a session at a more sociable time!
The studio layout is quite different from the pictures now. Improved acoustics and ergonomics. I'm just waiting for the
right light for a photograph :)
16/07/'07- gear
Some new stuff. I got a Boss CE-2 chorus pedal, gorgeous. Compared to the CE-1 emulation in NI Guitar Rig... I'll just say,
I won't ever be using the emulation. Actually, Guitar rig is not great. We got one of those new little Vox emulating amps.
It sounds far better, and it's more immediate.
I'm in the process of changing over to Kontakt on the Mac. It's very very tedious, but it should be good to have our extensive
sample library on tap with full recall inside a session. Emulator X2 is here also, that looks great. Some nice sessions coming up
in August.
Behringer BCF2000 is on the way. I'm hoping it'll make mixing even faster.
20/06/'07- session
Posing in studio with The Refuseniks:
13/06/'07- madtheory sounds endorsed by Emu systems
I'm about to start developing my sounds with the official endorsement of Emu Systems, the world's longest established developer of sampling instruments. They sound so good in fact, that I'm still using an Emu ESI4000 hardware sampler. They're upgrading me to the Emulator X soft sampler. First out will be the upright pianos, to be followed by my extensive library of original material. So this means I'll be using the Windows machine a lot more often!

I'm producing a couple of singles for Seeing Red Records. First band up is True Delusion.
06/06/'07
There's talk of a madtheory gig...
Finished audio post for Rebel Underground from Frameworks Films, documenting the campaign for a skateboard/ BMX/ rollerblade park in Cork city. Some amazing talent there. No web presence to show you though.
Femepop mixing and mastering has been completed. Sounds great.
I updated the mic list, I have the Shure PG series for toms and bass drum, and some more SD condensers. I have an agreement with a few other engineers to pool our mic collections. So if you need a specific mic, let me know, we probably have it.
28/05/'07
I'll be working on a single with The Refuseniks in a couple of weeks, fitting in to their busy gigging schedule.
Got some nice yellow and green mic cables.
So! Solved the BUPA mystery... Thanks David!
19/05/'07
And the top visitor to this website is... BUPA! Eh? If anyone knows why, contact us!
18/05/'07
Mags from femmepop was in to put the finishing touches to the EP. We did some BVs and guitars. I even did a guitar solo. One mix left to finalise, then it's out... I've been busy with correcting exams, hence the gap in updates. Dolby project is ongoing also.
4/05/'07
The Silver Age Of Wireless: The Thomas Dolby 25th Anniversary tribute album.
The Silver Age of Wireless is a project to celebrate the silver anniversary of the classic Thomas Dolby album The Golden Age of Wireless. Over the next few months we will be gathering new versions of songs from that album, re-recorded by contempory artists that have been inspired by this landmark recording. This project is your chance to show your interpretation of the Music of Thomas Dolby and we welcome anyone who wishes to contribute in any way. If you wish to submit music or artwork please contact us here. We have set up a Thomas Dolby tribute forum on our website in order to discuss ideas and help create collaborations between people interested in joining our project. This project depends on you getting involved, and the final goal is to have a collection of songs that shines new light on old classics and to be a commercial release that we can all be proud of being involved in making.
Tune in tonight...
24/04/'07
Nimrod Productions have used my upright pianos in two forthcoming PS3 games Astro Zoo and Super Rubber Dub.
20/04/'07
Silver Trail hit the singles charts today at number 21! This is my first time in the Irish top 30 :)
Here is a screen grab of it... IRMA weekly chart is here.
03/04/'07
Here's a handy website: where2record.com
21/03/'07- Due credit...
Nice write up in the Echo here. But I didn't produce The Walls or John Spillane ;)
So the Silvertrail single will be released Friday 13th!
14/03/'07- Sessions.
Pictures of The Girls of Summer sessions are here courtesy of Paddy O' Rahilly aka paddytech.
11/03/'07- Sessions.
The Girls of Summer were in for a mammoth 2 day session. 5 songs. Overdubbing and
sweetening next.
The film Making Pictures is completed. Release date to follow.
19/02/'07- Stuff.
Added a new/ old track to the music page. It's called "Revelation".
There's also a cover of the Men at Work song "Who can it be Now?" madtheory style!
Work continues on the film. Composing is finished. Mixing and dialogue sweetening today.
Waldorf Edition has arrived. This is good, we've missed this synth for a while.
New demo added to Upright Pianos page. Performed by the esteemed Mr. Thomas Hughes.
13/02/'07- Sessions.
I'm working on a film soundtrack with the artist Declan O'Mahony.
We are co-composing and producing, under the direction of Barry McCarthy. It's great!

02/02/'07- Nostalgia...
I've updated The Charms section, it's now a microsite.
The video for Camden is a new addition. Thanks to Billy Kelleher for locating the only copy left! It's on VHS but looks great. There's a whole new gallery of pictures too.
27/01/'07- "accomadate the volume control for protected the sauna from pounding."
Well, the ribbon mic is good, but the manual is hilarious!
Working on a documentary sound track next week...
20/01/'07- techy stuff...
More new gear-
Fame ribbon mic (very well made apparently, will be interesting to compare it with the STC4038)
Fame unidirectional condensers (an experiment, they're really cheap)
12 way balanced multicore with 4 headphone returns
8 way
balanced multicore
Behringer headphone amp (again, really cheap but useful)
It's holiday time in the music biz, so no new projects.
We had James Perrett transfer all of our various reel to reel tapes to Pro Tools, with very positive results. A lot of old tunes and sounds have come back, which we will be using in new solo projects, such as Ken's album. James of course did an excellent job with the transfers.
Doing some rewiring to streamline the use of all the synths.
16/01/'07- nothing much really...
New gear- Tapco DI-1A active DI box. It has a 10Megohm input impedance. Haven't tried it yet, but the spec is good.
Animal Rescue is being rerun on Mondays at 8:30 pm (Tomás did "audio rescue" for the first four episodes)
The Fuchsia band have finished their new song "Cad Fiú" for inclusion on the forthcoming SnaG Ceol '07 CD.
30/12/'06- nice one!
My upright pianos have been used in the latest project by Rich Aitken of Nimrod Productions: "They're ace. Did the job wonderfully".
20/12/'06- at last...
I have ring tones for sale! Go here to buy them. I carefully sampled the bells of Shandon and tried different tunes on them. Not everything works, they're in the key of C#, and even in the Emu sampler the transposing can take away the magic. Plus, they're quite rough sounding bells, so almost everything polyphonic sounds too harsh. I chose tunes that retain the vibe of Shandon, even when playing back on the tiny speaker in a mobile phone. Perfect for expats!
16/12/'06- studio fun...
The Fuchsia Band were back, recording their song for the SnaG Ceol '07 CD. This album went to number one in Ireland last year. We are trying to preserve the vibe and messiness of the demos but with classy performances and studio polish. It sounds like we've succeeded! They will be back after the hols for sweetening.
Tomás has been delving deeply into the possibilites of the Peter Siedlaczek Advanced Orchestra sample collection. Combined with the Emu sample library, we now have a fantastic range of orchestral colours. (Tomás began studying orchestration in UCC. He's still studying it to this day...)
Ken is hard at work writing songs for his new solo album, produced by Tomás. He's working on a Christmas song- he's on a roll with those at the moment :)
06/12/'06- it's real...
The Freakscene Christmas album "Happy Birthday Jesus" is in the shops now. Check out the packaging, it's very tasty.
It's been getting great airplay, including Tom Dunne's Pet Sounds show. There'll be a live promo Dec 15th on Red FM, and a gig Dec 17th in The Quad.
Our boys, The Hopper Brothers, have their own myspace.
Sales of Carols for Kenya have hit the 1000 mark! I knew I should have signed up for a royalty :)
After a short absence, the Emu CD version of the upright pianos is back in the shop.
22/11/'06
Freakscene album is finished. Tomás mastered the whole thing, tracked one band, mixed another and recorded the drums on the SS800 track. Oh, and The Hoppers repurposed (what a silly word) "Days on the Mardyke" featuring the Bells of Shandon, carefully sampled by Bobby and Longlegs Hopper!
Pics of the Bechstein upright and Premier Concert Marimbas added to the gear page.
10/11/'06
I'm mastering the Freakscene Christmas album.
Check the equipment page. I've added a photo of a portion of the mic collection. If you need a specific mic, let us know in advance of the session in case it is out on hire.
8/11/'06
The Carols for Kenya charity CD was launched yesterday, to fund the maintenance of an education centre in the central town of Lodwar. The CD makes a great Christmas present! Recording choirs is great fun. I used my new naiant omni directional microphones for that. You can see pictures of the sessions here.
31/10/'06
Tomás is working on some new material. He's working with computer vocals, inspired in part by Johann Johannsson's piece "Odi et Amo", and partly by his fascination with music for young children, just like his piece Fairytale, which you can see and hear here.
Ken is in the process of constructing a new studio, and is currently appreciating the benefits of good monitor speakers and a little acoustic treatment.
One of our friends and collaborators, gifted guitarist Michael O'Sullivan, has had his first book published. Congratulations Michael! Buy it on Amazon.com Michael has previously been published in several academic journals. He is currently teaching English In Japan, and working on a collection of short stories.
Some of you may have noticed that we're fans of the Yamaha TX16W sampler. Here is Tomás's article on it. And here's an interesting interview with John Bowen, where he mentions that an early version of the Korg Wavestation used the same filter engine. Don't get too excited! While very flexible and capable of many filter types, the TX16W filter engine ends up sounding more like 6dB slope than "classic" 24dB. However, it does have an interesting "phaser" filter.
23/10/'06
New gear:
Naiant miniature condensers.
Roland SPD-11 drum pads and sound module.
09/10/'06
New article on the Casio CZ range of synthesizers here.
04/10/'06
Newly redesigned images page, with fresh pictures of the studio.
05/09/'06
We've set up a posh new forum here.
31/08/'06
I mastered the new EP from The Citizen, due out in October. Great lyrical imagery, a pleasure to listen to. Beautifully recorded by Robbie Collins at Blue Monkey studio.
The femmepop EP is almost finished.
28/08/'06
We now have a "vintage" Yamaha DMP7D, an early digital mixing desk. It's being used as two and a half SPX90s, for classic reverb and chorus effects, via S/Pdif. It came as a package with the MLA7 rackmout 8 channel mic pre. Pretty cool!
21/08/'06
My flowerbed has really thrived...
21/07/'06
My flowerbed is thriving in this weather.
Transcriptors turntable is now fully restored.
I fixed two broken links, but there's one link I can't track down. What's "robots.txt" ??
16/07/'06
Fuschia band: we had an intense mastering session with DanDan (who uses the same special table as me- "in" joke, sorry!). Always good to have a second pair of ears when one has been focussed on a project for so long. So now, the album sounds AMAZING! I don't know the release date, they're duplicating it in the US while doing a festival tour.
Colin Deady is in for a few sessions, starting Monday. He's a gifted songwriter and one man band- vocals, bass, drums and guitar. I will have the pleasure of adding some keys.
The following week, I'm getting married! Wahoo!
11/07/'06
Online mastering is now available via secure and private ftp. Email us for details.
10/07/'06
Phew! It's been a while. Very busy, I'm getting married on the 27th!
The Fuschia band have finished their "the album", it's gone for mastering by Dandan, and they're off to Americay on Friday.
Before they left, I made sure to make samples of "The Brian's" "The Gibson" mandolin.
We have a distribution deal with Soundengine for our upright pianos CD, and we're working on another set.
Posh new server with ftp and SQL and loads of other stuff I don't understand! Clients can now upload mixes via secure ftp for mastering. And a cutey favicon!
femmepop has a famous person playing on her forthcoming album. Shhh...!
SS800 have finished the vocals. Yay!
Gear for sale- Fischmann BP100 pickup for acoustic bass, Boss HM2 distortion pedal, Gateway 15" monitor. SOLD
Dyno album is gearing up again...
22/06/'06
Silver Trail are about to release the single, and the Fuschia album is nearing completion. Hup!
The new studio is pretty much set up.
08/06/'06
Silver Trail- we recorded the drums in the band's kitchen, and it sounds like God himself playing! Bass and rhythm guitars completed, including ridiculously high string guitar a.k.a. Flynntar. Vocals tomorrow- stacks of BVs.
Fuchsia Band- album nearing completion. I will learn how to spell their name... and the difference between a reel and a waltz...
femmepop- mixes completed, awaiting famous person's piano overdub...
SS800- mixing in progress, kinda.
Tomás got a nice credit on the "Live at the Lobby" album. In all good record stores now!
22/05/'06
Construction of the studio is coming along nicely.
Nice rack:

19/05/'06
We have a video! Check the music page. It's really cute, great animation... check the credits.
femmepop mixes gone for approval.
Listen out for radio promo of "Gatecrashing" by SS800.
More wiring done in the studio. CD drives dying all over the shop :( never mind! We'll fix it...
17/05/'06
Here's a newspaper article on the "Festival of Light" for which Tomás did sound design and a musical piece.
Moved to the new studio. We haven't set up the gear properly. Having it all in a pile reduced the RT60, but there's still a flutter echo and a 160Hz hump... nevertheless, I've mixed the first SS800 single for radio, and the second femmepop song!
The Lentek speakers look good on their original stands. It's great to have all the keyboards accessible again. I haven't put the computer desk together, but the rack is in place- the Amek will sit on that. Wall hangings, poster and futon will make it a pleasant place for the next Fuschia session!
10/05/'06
Moving to a new studio (we hope) complete with Bechstein Piano, Concert Marimbas and drum kit. I'm very excited, we can rehearse now, and record without having to pack up the gear all the time... but I am available to do live recordings, with our new 16 input Pro Tools rig. It looks like I'll have two album projects this summer.
New track uploaded to the music page. It's called "Numbers" because I was into the Kraftwerk tune at the time. It started out as a repeating sequence... and stayed like that for a few years (!) while I tried to develop it! But it had a mood as it was, so I just added strings and percussion. Our most played track on the radio- like, six times or something:) It's one of those tracks that emerged from the archive of ideas, which goes back to 1990 when I first used a sequencer. For the tech heads, it's one of the first things I did with the Kenton Pro Solo hooked up to the Yamaha CS5 synth, with Cubase 3.0 on the Atari. Back then, the archive was 5 floppy discs. Now it's an 80 Gig drive and 50+ CDRs... we have good quality control you see...
Feck, it's like a real blog now!
8/05/'06
I find myself reparing synths for friends, exercising my electronics knowledge. I replaced a VCFand VCA chip in Finny's Juno 106 synth. He said:
"Couldn't sell Juno after using it today. Sounds great. Thanks for fixing it".
It's a nice little synth, and we have lots of samples from it! I also had a Moog Opus 3 for a week. Not much of a synth, just a very basic organ, although it has got the Moog filter which is nice. The string section was dead. It went back to its original owner in a hurry. But if you have any sick synths, give me a call, I might be able to help. Finny runs the wonderful bpm studios, the best recording space in Cork. One day I am going to put an orchestra in there!
2/05/'06
Animal Rescue post is finished.
New server acquired- so we'll have videos and stuff soon!
Some new ideas in the pipeline, as always ;)

17/03/'06

Tomás did sound design and sound production for the whole event, and composed original music for the children's stage. We'll be uploading pics and movies shortly.
Fair play John Spillane! The Hoppers song Days on the Mardyke, is on promotion and available in Virgin and pluggd. See People's Republic of Cork for details. John Spillane has heard it, and it wrecked his head, and he played it on his show, and then he gave it his blessing. Fair play!
